The circle has been used through the

ages to symbolise the cosmos, relating to

the sun and other celestial bodies. The

concept of the

mandala

too originates

in the circle and other geometric shapes.

Jamini Roy, who took inspiration from

folk traditions, creates a circular flower

motif which was an auspicious symbol

of fertility, which ties to the decorative

idiom rooted in mythology and folklore.
