Earl Henry Brewster [1878-1957] was an American

painter, writer, and scholar, best known today for

his close friendship with D. H. Lawrence and for his

compilation of the life of the Buddha, published in 1926.

He married Achsah Barlow Brewster [1878-1945], also

an artist. After living in Italy for 20 years they moved

to Almora in the Himalayas in 1935 and lived there

until death. Their work was deeply influenced by their

contemporary, Russian artist-philosopher Nicholas

Roerich, also living in the Himalayas.

Anagarika B. Govinda [1898-1985] was born Ernst

Lothar Hoffmann andwas of German-French origin

who became a Buddhist monk. His art is obviously

influenced by Roerich. He was the founder of the

order of the Arya Maitreya Mandala and an expositor

of Tibetan Buddhism, Abhidharma, and Buddhist

meditation as well as other aspects of Buddhism. He

was also a painter and poet.

Paper-covered boards. Frontispiece mount a little

crumpled.
